‘Social Tango’ performance brings an evening of Dance, Music and Film from Buenos Aires to Vernon
VERNON, BC — The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society (VDPAC) delightfully invites you to immerse yourself in the sensual passion of tango with Social Tango, a special 2024-25 SPOTLIGHT Dance Series presentation, brought to Vernon by Argentina’s Social Tango Project, on Monday, October 28, 2024 at 7:30PM.
Social Tango explores the social value of dance, celebrating tango community through the skillfully coordinated mediums of dance, music and film. Tango lovers—and all lovers of Dance--are invited to experience an unforgettable evening set to the rhythm of this popular dance in the intimacy of a milonga, recreated here by multi-disciplinary choreographer Agustina Videla. Dance, music, projections and documentary film combine to create an authentic, immersive experience.
VDPAC’s Erin Kennedy shares, “Social Tango blends dance, live music and film to create an authentic, immersive experience. This love story will sweep you away for an evening in the heart of Buenos Aires...in Vernon!” Dance enthusiasts who enjoyed the immensely popular SPOTLIGHT Season performance of Cuba Vibra in March 2019 will also thoroughly enjoy Social Tango.
Be it the music, beauty, or sense of connection, tango has always won hearts worldwide. Across cultures and generations, this “conversation between bodies” enables people to meet in an “embrace.” From Buenos Aires, dance company Social Tango Project is touring US and Canada, playing in Calgary, Vancouver, Greater Toronto and Montreal, bringing their passionate dance to Vernon on October 28. The performance features an original score, a music quartet, a live singer and 10 remarkable dancers to fill VDPAC’s mainstage and the hearts of all audience members.
Guided by her own musical tastes, choreographer Agustina Videla pieces the scenes together to create a multi-disciplinary show with close ties to local communities, Social Tango recreates a space capable of bringing together people of different generations, origins and cultures. Videla combines photography, dance and cinematic documentary to create a unique live performance experience. Videla adds, “This work is a way to celebrate tango as a dance accessible to all of us, and the milonga as a place that creates community.”
The performance aims to inspire audience members to join the dance floor and cultivate tango communities worldwide. Preview video is available at: https://vimeo.com/911699315 and as part of VDPAC’s 2024-25 SPOTLIGHT Season highlights at: www.vdpac.ca.
